TOPIC: CHRIST’S SUPPLICATION FOR OUR SANCTIFICATION.
TEXT: JOHN 17:13-19,4; 15:11; 16:20-24; ROMANS 5:11; PHILIPPIANS 2:2; PSALMS 51:12; ISAIAH
12:2,3; Luke 10:20; HEBREWS 12:2; 1 JOHN 1:4.
We are coming to John 17, tonight we are looking at verses 13, all through to 19.
John 17:13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
Those are the verses we are looking at today, very deep verses, expensive verses indeed. As you come back to verse 13, you will remember that Jesus Christ was praying. He started the prayer at the beginning of the chapter of chapter 17, and the prayer still continue. Christ supplicates for our sanctification. The Lord Jesus Christ had come into the world, but now He knew He was going back to heaven. The departure of Christ from the earth was very near, he was about to go to Calvary, about to die for us for everything that we need, and He knew He was going back to God, and now we see the assurance and certainty in verse 13, and you see the confidence of which He said.
There are some things you ought to know about the Lord Jesus Christ and these are:
I. He knew why He came
Ii. He knew what was to be done.
Iii. He knew how to do what He was to do
Iv. He knew where to begin what the Lord had called Him to begin
V. He knew who to engage along with Himself.
VI. He also knew when He would finish and then go back to the Father.
Pick that one by one and then think about your life, think about yourself, that you have come into this life, and you understand why you have come. Jesus Christ knew why He came, He came here and He was not distracted, He was not diverted, He went on doing exactly what He was called to do. And He was looking at the goal and destiny and the terminal point, and He went, and He did without any distractions.
He knew what He came here to do and He was connected with that, and He consecrated on that, and now that He knew that He had finished what He ought to do, He said now I come to thee in His prayer. You need to be certain like that, understand like that, that you know why you are here, and you know what you are supposed to do.
He also knew how to do it that it will please the Father. And He used the appropriate methods, He used the best method to that He will please the Father in everything that He do.
Now He knew where to begin, and He stayed there, He wasn't here and there, jumping up and going down, exactly the place He ought to begin, He knew where to begin and He stayed there.
He knew who to engage along with Himself, and He chose them, so that they would do what ought to be done.
He knew when the word would have gone around and when he would leave, and He would have finished the work. I pray you will know what He appointed you to do.
Everything Jesus did, there was a purpose. The purpose is that they might have His joy fulfilled in themselves. As you think about the Lord Jesus Christ, what He said, He said so that my joy would be fulfilled in them. What He thoughts, He said so that my joy would be fulfilled in them, He gave instruction to His disciples that His joy might be fulfilled in them. All the miracles that He did, He did them for just one purpose, that His joy might be fulfilled in them. Everything He provided, He provided so that, the joy of the people might be full. You think about your own life, what you provide, what you say, you want to make sure that you have a goal, you have a purpose, that your joy might be fulfilled in them. Jesus Christ wanted the Joy and the happiness of those He was preaching to, not only their earthly joy, He wanted their eternal and unending Joy. He teaches, He instructs, He directs that the joy of the people might be full. Jesus Christ centered on the joy of people. When you minister, whatever you do, do you have the joy of everybody in the congregation or is only your joy you are thinking about? You see the Lord Jesus Christ, He had a goal, He had a purpose, that everything He did on earth, He wanted to pass joy unto them, standing joy, abiding joy, continue joy, great joy that will usher them eventually into eternal joy. The Lord wanted the Joy of the people to be fulfilled, anything you do in the service of the Lord, you want them to go from sorrow to Joy, from sadness to gladness, and you want the joy of the Lord to be their strength, you want that joy to grow and continue until the end. The purpose of everything we do in the church, in everywhere is to make the joy of people full. Jesus Christ died to provide joy of Salvation, I pray your life will spread joy, your life will implant joy and you will make joy to flow into other people IN Jesus Name. This is the joy of Salvation of the Lord He gives, not denominational joy, it's joy that Jesus Christ provided, I pray if you got that joy, it will increase, if you have not known that joy, tonight you will have that joy IN Jesus Name. The Lord will be your salvation, idol will not be your salvation, the world will not be your salvation, and the self righteousness will not be your salvation. When that salvation comes, it's something that happens in heaven concerning anyone that comes to know the Lord in new experiential salvation. When you come to Christ, you turn away from sin, you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and your name goes on record in heaven, and the Lord says rejoice because your name is written in the book of life in heaven, and after that you're looking forward to when you will reign with the Lord, you will reign with the Lord. Whatever happens here on earth, you will keep on looking unto the day of the coming of the Lord. You are studying the Bible that your joy will be full. When you hear the word of, when the word of God get to you, there is a purpose, there is a goal, it's that if you don't have the joy before, all the sorrow, all the confusion, the distress and the depression in your life will go. Tonight is that night. Everything Jesus did, and what He's doing now is so that we will have Joy, and your Joy will be full IN Jesus Name.
POINT ONE. OUR SEPARATION AND PRESERVATION FROM THE WORLD.
JOHN 17:14
Christ is talking to the Father, He knew what He has committed to His disciples, and so He prayed unto the Father to keep them from evil. He will keep you from evil.
I. The true believers' separation.
John 17:14,16; 15:18,19; Proverbs 29:27; Leviticus 20:23-24,26; Jeremiah 10:1-2; Romans 3:19; 1 John 2:15-17; 2 Peter 2:20-22; James 1:27; 4:4
You see what He said about His own disciples, I pray that the Lord will say the same thing about you. He knows you and He sees you everywhere, He says His disciples are not of the world just like as He is not of the world. In the same way to the same level, to the same understanding that He is not of the world. You see how sure and confident He was, He was happy that the disciples are truly converted, the salvation has worked effectively in their lives, God will bear testimony concerning you. The world hated the disciples because they are not of the world, because their lives are different, they are cleansed, there's a separation between them and those who are not converted. When the Lord called the children of Israel, and the Lord make that distinction very clear. If you're a child of God, the people of the world will know you're not part of them because there's a true believer's separation from the world. We are not of the world, you're not copying them, you're not copying their waywardness, you're not copying their styles, and you're not copying anything from them. When the Lord speak unto you, hear Him, do not learn the way of the unbelievers, don't copy their marriages, don't learn their ways of doing things, if we are Born again, there's such a mark difference between us and unbelievers. We are not of the world, we are different from the world, if you're like the world, then you're guilty and condemn with the world, and you will be judged with the world, but you are not of the world, there will be different about your lifestyle and theirs. There's pollution, there's defilement in the world, but when you became Born again and the Lord cleanses your heart, you will escape the pollution of the world. But if you're entangled with the affairs of this world, it means you are gone back and Christ will not testify about you. There's a pure religion, there's a traditional religion, the Lord confirm pure religion in your life IN Jesus Name. You will be uncontaminated, you will be undefiled. The love for the world is enmity against God, if you be like the world, you will be an enemy of God I pray you will not be an enemy of God.
II. The transformed believers’ preservation from the world.
John 17:15; Galatians 1:4; 6:14; 2 Timothy 4:18; 1 John 4:3-6; 5:4,5,18,19,21
There's evil in the world because there's a devil in the world, that's why the Lord say He will protect you from the evil of the world. If you're born again, that system of protection is in salvation you have, we are delivered from this present evil world. Any evil in your community will not affect you and your family. We have nothing in common with the world, we are crucified to the world and the evil of the world will not touch our lives. The Lord shall deliver you from every evil work. The Lord will preserve you, He will protect you and every evil work of any ocultic power, thank God preservation for you, you are protected. The spirit in the world is the spirit that oppose Christ, that evil power will not come near you because Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world, they cannot conquer you, they cannot suck you up, you are protected IN Jesus Name. There's Spirit of truth and there's spirit of error, the Spirit of truth will make you overcomer, thank God you know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not and that wicked ones cannot destroy your life, they cannot touch you, wherever they are coming from, they cannot touch you, all you need is to keep yourself from idol.
POINT TWO. OUR SANCTIFICATION AND PURITY THROUGH THE WORD.
JOHN 17:17,9
Our sanctification is another experience Christ provided on Calvary after we are saved. The world cannot have that sanctification, if you want to have sanctification, you begin at Salvation, so Jesus said the prayer He prayed, He prayed for those who are born again. If you believe in Jesus, He prays for you, His prayer for you is to be sanctified.
I. His prayer for our sanctification.
I Thessalonians 5:23
He will sanctify you wholly, your spirit, soul and body shall be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you're sanctified, that sanctification will remain permanent, the Lord will do it IN Jesus Name.
II. The Purity through Sanctification.
Titus 2:14; 1 Thessalonians 4:3,4
He redeems us from all iniquity, when you have salvation, you are a pardoned person, and when you are sanctified, you become peculiar people of God, zealous of good works. Our sanctification is the will of God, He will accomplish it in your life IN Jesus Name.
III. The provision for our Sanctification.
Ephesians 5:25-27; Hebrews 2:9-11.
The Lord Jesus Christ provided for our sanctification. This is not for the world, for the world He gave Himself so they can be born again, they are not part of the glorious church, but He prayed for the sanctification of the gracious church that they might be glorious church, there's a graceless church, they don't preach salvation, they don't preach eternal life, but in the gracious church, because they are born again, they have love, and after that experience of grace, there's a second work of sanctification that makes you a glorious church. There's the provision for our sanctification.
iv. The purpose of our Sanctification.
Hebrews 10:14,16; Romans 6:6.
There's purpose of everything Christ does. The Lord Jesus Christ wants to perfect us, God wrote the law on the table of stone, and when situation come, they can forget, but now the Lord is going to write that law inside your mind so that whenever there's any trial, you will remember that law of God. When you're crucified, the body of sin will be destroy.
V. The price of our Sanctification.
Hebrews 13:12-14,20-21.
On your behalf, the Lord paid the price for your sanctification. Give yourself to the Lord and abandon yourself to the Lord. The blood He shed makes us perfect to do His will.
VI. The preparation for our Sanctification.
Leviticus 20:7,8; Isaiah 6:1-6; 2 Corinthians 7:1.
Before you can be saved, you must prepare for it, and for you to be sanctified, you must equally prepare for it. The Lord wants to sanctify you but you must set yourself apart, you must live the privilege life of being born again, you must make your way right, you must make the proper preparation and then sanctification will come. Our God is Holy, He's pure, He's righteous, and when Isaiah saw the holiness of God, although he was born again, yet he said woe is me for I am undone. The fire that takes away every defilement will come and take iniquities away from your life, there's second work of sanctification, you prepare for it, you demand for it and the Lord will do it for you. We must cleanse ourselves from impurity, and as you do it, the Lord Himself will sanctify you IN Jesus Name.
VII. Our preservation in sanctification.
Our preservation in sanctification is so that we get it, we do not loose it, you take it everywhere and you bring it back home, you preserve it in the church and you take it back home with you. Keep yourself and anything that will take away your sanctification, you will not allow it IN Jesus Name. He will keep you spotless. The Lord will keep you, everything you are learning, everything you've experienced, let that word abides in you. You will continue IN Jesus Name, nothing will take your place away from you in the Kingdom of God and that prayer of sanctification Jesus prayed for will be answered on your behalf IN Jesus Name.
POINT 3. OUR SERVICE AND PARTICIPATION IN HIS WORK.
JOHN 17:18
i. As Thou hath sent Me into the world.
John 20:21; 4:34; Luke 5:32; 19:10; 1 Timothy 1:15; 2 Peter 3:9; 1 John 4:9; John 3:16,17
Now Jesus is transferring the ministry to you, He said as the Father sent him, so He sends us to the world, the Father sent Jesus to do His will and to finish His work, and Jesus did everything perfectly, the same way He's sending us to the world to make that work done. Jesus came to call sinners to repentance, and He said the same work He's given to us. The Father gave Him the work to do, to seek the lost and to save the world, so He's sending us forth to seek the lost, we are to preach the word of God to sinners and show them how they can have the Salvation of the Lord. He's not willing that anyone should perish but that all should come to repentance, that's the work He came to do and everyone He spoke to, He called them to repentance and that's the same work He's given us to do.
ii. Even so have I also sent them into the world.
John 17:18; 20:21; Matthew 28:1820; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:45-47; John 1:29; Acts 3:26; 26:16-18; 8:4,26-31,35; 11:19,21
We are to preach repentance to the sinners that they might have eternal life through Him. We are to call sinners to repentance, that's the purpose of our calling. Christ has sent us into the world, the same passion, the same compassion and zeal Jesus has, that's the same compassion, the same commitment and the same courage we ought to have. He's given us the same work of redemption and calling sinners so that they might have salvation of the Lord. The work Christ has given us to do is to preach repentance, don't stay in a little backyard somewhere, come out of your comfort zone and go into the world and preach the gospel of salvation to every creature, those who listen to you will be born again IN Jesus Name. We are to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins, as we talk to the people, it's not only to preach, we will not leave them in their sins, we will bring them into salvation. That's what Christ has commanded and that's what we are going to do. Many people do not know that JESUS Christ is the Saviour of the world, we are to point out Saviour to them, we are to tell them about Jesus, and as they believe, the Lord will save them, the Lord called us to be the sources of salvation to sinners, now He's sending us to turn people away from their sins and we turn them to Saviour, and as they believe, they will have eternal life, they will follow you to heaven IN Jesus Name. You have the gospel, you have the revelation of the word today, the Lord is sending us forth to preach the gospel, and as you go preaching the word of God, the Lord will preserve you, He will protect you and they will be saved IN Jesus Name, as the Lord saved you, you're going to be faithful, you will open their eyes to see that Jesus is the Saviour and there will be real salvation in their lives. It will happen IN Jesus Name. The early church did what the Lord wants them to do, it's wonderful to come to the Bible study, as you hear the word, you will go forth to your community to spread the gospel, we are not to hide ourselves inside the temple, we are to go out and preach the gospel to every creature. You will arise and you will take the gospel of eternal life with you and people are going to hear and they will repent IN Jesus Name. As you see the sinners, go there and preach to them, you will preach JESUS to sinners and they will be born again IN Jesus Name. Will you preach the gospel? This work will prosper in your hand IN Jesus Name. You will be ready to take the gospel and the Lord will empower you, you will strengthen you to do what you need to do.
